Central Station

Central Station movie still

Central Station (Central do Brasil) is a 1998 dramatic film from Brazil. This is one of my favorite movies, second only to Gone With the Wind. I never heard of this film before I rented it at the video store. It was an amazing discovery.

It is a story about a young boy (Josué) and his relationship with a stranger (Dora) after his mother is killed in an accident. After his mother is killed, he is left alone with no one to care for him. He stays at Rio de Janeiro's main railway station (Central Station).

Dora is a lonely, single, middle aged woman, a former school teacher who writes letters for illiterate people at Central Station. Just before she was killed, Josué's mother had paid Dora to write and send a letter to Josué's father.

Josué goes back to Dora after his mother's death to retrieve the letter so he can learn the whereabouts of his father. Dora is callous and unsympathetic. As her character evolves she begins to care about the boy, eventually assisting him in the search for his father.

The actress who plays Dora, Fernanda Montenegro, is absolutely phenomenal.

This movie is in Portuguese with English subtitles. Do not let the subtitles deter you from watching this, it is a fantastic movie. I am not crazy about subtitles myself, but I assure you it does not detract from the film.

The movie won many awards throughout the world, and was nominated for best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards (I can't believe it didn't win). Fernanda Montenegro was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. The film did win at the Golden Globes and BAFTA Film Awards for best foreign language film.

It is hard for me to say what makes this film so wonderful. There is an intangible quality to it that is magical. The cinematography is amazing. The acting is fantastic. The story is so touching. I cried at the end of this movie like I have never cried before.

I am embedding the trailer for this film below, unfortunately I do not believe the trailer does justice to this film.

Alan Carr: Chatty Man

Alan Carr Chatty Man

Alan Carr is a British comedian and television personality. He hosts a talk show on television in the UK entitled Alan Carr: Chatty Man on Channel 4.

Alan Carr is extremely funny and Chatty Man is a very entertaining program. I dare say he probably would never have risen to the success he has achieved in the UK if he was in the USA. Carr's act is very camp, however Brits are (in general) more open-minded and accepting of differences than Americans.

The show features celebrity guests on each program, including a musical guest who also performs. Carr seems to be able to get any celebrity to appear on his program, sometimes people that rarely appear on talk shows in the USA. The interviews are no-holds-barred, Carr will ask about everything and anything. Some of his guests have included Rihanna, Whoopi Goldberg, Katy Perry, Courtney Love, Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, Bette Midler, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, Mickey Rourke, Ivana Trump, Daryl Hannah, Shakira, Pamela Anderson, and Robin Williams.

One of the most interesting interviews I have seen from this program was with Lindsay Lohan (see video link below). She didn't really seem to know who he was, and was taken aback by his line of questioning. It was a very funny and interesting interview, especially because she rarely does interviews anymore in the USA. In the beginning of the interview he offers her something to drink from a globe bar he has on the set. It was a very funny moment as this interview was smack in the middle of her legal problems related to alcohol and drugs. She wisely declined, and seemed oblivious to the fact he was poking fun at her when people in the audience started laughing.

Alan Carr and Lindsay Lohan

Prior to Chatty Man, Carr used to be on a very popular show, also on Channel 4, called The Friday Night Project (which moved to Sundays and became The Sunday Night Project). It was a comedy-variety show very similar to Saturday Night Live in the USA. He co-hosted the program with Justin Lee Collins. The show featured a different celebrity guest host every week. Since then, Justin Lee Collins has also moved on to host his own chat shows.
